WONDERFUL PAIR OF ANTIQUE WEDDING Cabinet Photos of Dressy Young African Americans, Man & Woman, SAME STUDIO, ON RAILROAD CAR, Mississippi, c.1880DESCRIPTION:
Very rare pair of antique WEDDING PHOTOS of 2 dressed up African Americans. Great looking young lady, probably no older than 25. Dressed to the nines, including a nice pin, and an ABSOLUTELY GREAT PERIOD HAT!!! Also holding neat umbrella in great pose.
Scans show it all. Such early photos are very scarce, especially females and especially ones dressed this nicely. Obviously the number taken was small. This photo is no newer than 1880.
Also with this comes another antique cabinet photo of a well dressed young man. Also dressed up quite nicely. THIS IS AN IDENTICAL STUDIO SETTING, AND IT APPEARS THAT BOTH WERE TAKEN THE SAME DAY!!! SAME SET, STANDING NEXT TO SAME CHAIR, SAME BOUQUET OF FLOWERS IN THE BACK. I believe that these were their wedding photos based on other ones I have seen. This is the only reason there would be for both of them to be together at the same photographer's, at the same time, and so dressed up.
Both photo formats are identical as well.....standard cabinet photo size and characteristics. Photographer's ID on the bottom of both, "Geo. H. Newton's RAIL ROAD Photographic Emporium". This came with a collection of similar antique photos and materials, some of which are identified by person or by photographer/town. Most appear to be from Mississippi, and I assume this one came from there as well.
The photographer is also unique in that his photo studio is specified as a railroad studio and IT SHOWS A RAILROAD CAR. I BELIEVE THIS WAS A VERY RARE RAILROAD MOUNTED TRAVELLING STUDIO THAT WENT FROM TOWN TO TOWN IN RURAL AREAS. A great idea and a VERY UNUSUAL USE OF A RAILROAD CAR vs. the cost of a fixed studio in a non-populous area.
Would make a great gift for the photographic collectors in your family OR THE RAILROAD COLLECTORS. Good condition overall. A little crazing to the emulsion on the right edge in a few spots on the female photo, which doesn't really affect the primary image and subject matter, but the male photo is in perfect condition.
Good early, special cabinet photos of African Americans like this are very hard to find.
