Description
GJPawAuctions is pleased to offer for sale a superb rare and original antique painted pine wood Tibetan Cabinet with tiger motif. Tibetan furniture is usually made from pine - the most readily available wood in Tibet, and the pieces have a very distinctive style, being brightly painted with designs usually including flowers and pastoral or religious imagery. This cabinet features a stunning tiger motif. The tiger is one of four sacred animals associated with the Kagyu lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. Bodhisattva
Vajrapani
wears the skin of a tiger and dharma protectors such as
Mahakala
follow in this tradition that combines yogic symbolism with the Buddhist association of the tiger to compassion and generosity. Original Tibetan furniture is now very rare, in the main because there was virtually no consumer class in Tibet during the 19th century to demand luxury goods such as fine furniture, which meant that almost all furniture from the region originated in the monasteries, made by and for the monks.
The cabinet measures 34.5 inches in length by 12.5 inches deep by 25.5 inches in height (87.6 cm by 31.7 cm by 64.7 cm). It is in very good used condition, with wear consistent to a dating from the mid-19th century. Importantly, it is an intact, original piece. It has a fine provenance coming from an important U.S. Mid-west collection. This is a rare and beautiful piece, excellent for today’s décor, and a unique opportunity for a collector of fine antique furniture to adorn either an office or home, while savoring the culture, traditions and lifestyle of Chinese civilization.
