    BACKGROUND:
    The NASA Exceptional Bravery Medal (EBM) was established on 15 May 1961. This decoration is awarded for exemplary and courageous handling of an emergency in a NASA program activity, or for exemplary and courageous service in the performance of an official task of importance to the NASA mission.
    To qualify for the award of the EBM, the act must be voluntary and undertaken without regard to personal danger. I addition, the act for which the award is made may involve either lifesaving or the safeguarding of human life or government property. Since the intent of the Exceptional Bravery Medal is to recognize heroic action taken during an emergency, the EBM is among the rarest NASA decorations currently in us.
    Only 30 Exceptional Bravery Medals were awarded between 1961 and 2000.
