Description

NASA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL
(Type II)
(2055)
BACKGROUND:
The Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) is one of two awards inherited by NASA when it absorbed the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and is the highest honor that NASA confers.
The DSM exists in two types. The first design (Type I) has a gold circular planchet bearing the NASA seal and was awarded from 1959 to 1961. This first design is obsolete and has been superseded by the current design (Type II). Only three individuals received the Type I NASA DSM, they were J.W. Crowley, Alan B. Shepard Jr., and Virgil I. “Guss” Grissom.
NASA has been very conservative in awarding the DSM, through 31 October 2000, NASA has awarded 587 Distinguished Service Medals.
