Description
American Greek Revival sterling silver compote, ca 1865. Oval helmet bowl on short knopped stem flowing into round foot support by 4 leaf-capped scrolled shield supports. Leaf-capped scroll bracket handle with cast herm in figure of piping cherub. Handle mounted to end with flying volute scroll. Bowl exterior has chased leaf border on stippled ground terminating in applied volutes. Loose and feathery leaves and flowers engraved on bowl and foot.Lively Classicism attributed to JR Wendt, a New York maker who was active circa 1855 to 1870, and whose work is identifiable by the stamp "English Sterling". Also, retailer's stamp for JE Caldwell in Philadelphia.
