    Description

AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY - Pianist-composer GEORGE WALKER handbill from 1947.
This handbill dates from early in Walker's career, when he was in his mid-20s. It measures roughly 6.5" x 9.5".
A tiny piece has worn off the lower left corner (looking from the front), which does not affect the text.
George Walker (1922-2018) was featured in this handbill as a pianist, but he later won greater fame as a composer.
He became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for music, for his work "Lilacs" in 1996.
He published more than 90 works and received commissions from the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, and other orchestras.
